Podcast Ping 31 - In With The New

The new format of the show is starting today. About the only real difference is the shorter length and I won't always have a theme. I'm focusing more on folk music this year as well.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing31/pp31.mp3

I may be using Tuesday's spot for Beowulf instead of a regular show since I really want to get through it early enough so that those studying it this year can use it. I has appeared to be more popular than regular episodes so far, with the Mininova posting of the Prelude having been downloaded more than 4,000 times so far.

The next episode of Beowulf will be Thursday. I'm trying to record as much as I can beforehand so I can get it out faster. I already have up to 8 finished and 12 in unedited recordings.

Podcast Ping 30 - Out With The Old

This is a collection of material for 2007 that I haven't been able to work into other podcasts. Next year I would like to use all new poetry so I'm using up much of the poetry I haven't used yet. So this episode is a mixed bag much longer that the regular episodes.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing30/pp30.mp3

Although the schedule is always in flux, I'm looking now at posting one episode a week of the music and poetry so I can fit in more Beowulf. And I've been experimenting with a new comedy podcast, but that will have a different feed and won't be part of Podcast Ping.

Happy New Year!

Podcast Ping Bonus 9 - A Visit From St. Nicholas

This episode is a reading of "A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement Moore," better known as "The Night Before Christmas" with music intermixed. This episode is one you will want to play for your family and friends, and those you want to make your family and friends.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPingBonus9/ppb9.mp3

This is the last bonus episode. After this, all episodes will be numbered normally. As I stated previously, the reason for the bonus episodes was to make up for the experimental episodes of 1-9. Episode 29 will be the 29th episode of the current format, excluding the specials or the Beowulf readings. (Including them and the 9 early ones I'm somewhere around 45 episodes.) It includes more traditional Christmas music.

Saturday, December 15, 2007

Podcast Ping 28 - Winter Words

I mislabelled episode Bonus 8 as 28 but here's the real 28, or it could be considered Bonus 8. Either way, it's some winter poetry and music in tune with the season.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing28_652/pp28-WinterWords.mp3

Either way, it shouldn't happen again. The final Bonus episode will be Tuesday and it will be one not to miss. After that, all episodes will be numbered regardless of when they air--except for the Beowulf or special episodes.

Beowulf Reading 5

Here is part five of Beowulf.

http://www.archive.org/download/BeowulfReading5/BeowulfReading5.mp3

With the holidays coming up, this will be the last episode of Beowulf until the new year. I'll still be posting regular episodes of Podcast Ping. I've recorded a few more Beowulf, but a cold over the past couple weeks kept me from doing as much as I wanted to. But I do want to get at least a couple a week out in January. I have even considered using Tuesdays which I would normally use for a regular episode. But either way, I will get through it.

Podcast Ping 28 - Heaven And That Other Place

This podcast complements the last and eases into the Christmas season.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing28/ppb8-HeavenAndThatOtherPlace.mp3

Next episode will have the theme of Winter, followed by the final bonus episode, a reading of "A Visit from St. Nicholas", then a more traditional Christmas episode. There will be no episode Christmas day, but I will be ending the year with a special hour long episode.

Podcast Ping 27 - Cosmic Journey

Look up in the sky on a starry night and listen to this podcast. Just make sure you're warm enough and don't fall asleep in the snow.

I am now an official member of the Association of Poetry Podcasters. While it may not seem like much to those who have never heard about it, it is a recognition of my efforts. Their website can be found at http://poetrypodcasting.org.

Beowulf Reading 4

The fourth part of Beowulf.

http://www.archive.org/download/BeowulfReading4/BeowulfReading4.mp3

I still haven't settled on a schedule for these but I would like to get about three a week done if possible. However, that might not happen until after the holidays.

Monday, December 3, 2007

Beowulf Reading 3

The third part of Beowulf.

http://www.archive.org/download/BeowulfReading3/BeowulfReading3.mp3

The Prologue and first part has been quite popular--using one particular distribution system it's seen over 2000 downloads. It's a legitimate distribution system (and not spam), but for obvious reasons I'm not quite ready to reveal it just yet. I'm still experimenting with it and I want to get a little more data before I describe the system.

Some already know how it's done and have found there way here from it. Some have tried using it before for podcasts. And since there's two critical parts (three if you consider titles), some have only used one and not seen as much success. But I will reveal it soon.

Podcast Ping 26 - Great Big Sea on the High C

This is a special, all Great Big Sea episode. And it's all podsafe music! Just remember, if you're distributing this, the whole show must be distributed intact; you can't edit songs out and share.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing26/pp26-gbs.mp3

For those using the Podcast Pickle directory, the podcast can be found at:

Every addition counts towards the overall ratings, and one addition can make a significant difference.

I'm still waiting for a listing in the Zune directory. They have over ten thousand to sort through and hopefully they will update this week.

Beowulf Reading 2

Beowulf 2.

http://www.archive.org/download/BeowulfReading2/Beowulf2.mp3

From what I can gather, the reading has been quite successful so far. I'm likely to do more after finishing this and have a shorter poem in mind which should only be about six or seven parts.

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Podcast Ping Bonus 7 - Stormy Weather

A little music and poetry about weather this time.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPingBonus7/ppb7-StormyWeather.mp3

I was going to save this for next week and do a movie commentary this week, but I came down with a cold and couldn't record. I could also have added another bonus using next year's material, but it would throw off the count and I don't want to get into regular Tuesday episodes until the new year.

I'll try to get a movie commentary done this week; if I can't I'll post an episode of Beowulf on Tuesday. I also plan to release Beowulf 3 this Thursday.

Saturday, November 24, 2007

Podcast Ping 25

This episode doesn't have a specific theme.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing25/pp25.mp3

I may post another bonus episode on Tuesday instead of a movie critique but I would like to get another one in before the end of the year. I may also get into posting Beowulf weekly, likely Thursdays, depending upon how things go; I don't like to put episodes too close together or feed readers are inclined to miss them.

Thursday, November 22, 2007

Beowulf Reading - Prologue

I've decided to tackle Beowulf, all 41 parts plus the prologue. I can't say what the release schedule will be but I will be continuing to release my regular episodes on Sundays and Tuesdays.

http://www.archive.org/download/BeowulfReading-Prologue/BeowulfPrologue.mp3

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Podcast Ping Bonus 6 - Going Going Gone

The songs in this episode reflect the title, Going, Going, Gone.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPingBonus6/ppb6-GoingGoingGone.mp3

Next Tuesday, provided I get the opportunity, I would like to put up another movie commentary. I've been meaning to do one for a while but haven't had the chance.

If I don't, I'll at least re-release the poetry from episodes 1-9 then. I'll try to get them back up some time before the end of the year. I want to rerecord them first. I've learned how to do a better performance since I first recorded them so they should be more interesting to listen to.

I didn't realize how much poetry I've done. So far I've posted over one hundred poems, the one hundredth being back in episode 22. I expect to have posted one hundred and seventy-five before the end of the year. The rate should slow down next year because I'll be doing about six a week instead of the about ten a week that I'm currently doing. I calculate I'll reach two hundred sometime around the end of January or start of February and by this time next year I could have over four hundred posted.

Podcast Ping 24 - Writing

The theme of this podcast is writing.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing24/pp24.mp3

As some might have noticed, I've removed the older posts of episodes 1-9 because I felt someone sampling the show might get the wrong impression. I will redo the poetry and post it at a later date.

Remember, the music is free and legal under podsafe music provisions so don't worry about subscribing or downloading.

Podcast Ping Bonus 5 - Ways

Not much to say but here it is:

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPingBonus5/ppb5-ways.mp3

As a matter of scheduling, I plan to replace one of the upcoming Tuesday bonus episodes with another movie commentary (if I can find the time). I also don't plan on putting one out Christmas day (which falls on a Tuesday), although I have a couple of Christmas episodes prior. In the new year the Tuesday episodes will have regular episode numbers instead of being labeled as bonus episodes.

Podcast Ping 23 - Comrades

This episode honours those who died during the war with a tribute to Dr. John McCrae and a reading of "In Flanders' Fields" at the end.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing23/pp23-comrades.mp3

It seems I made a mistake and left the credits out. I recorded them but when I edited the show together I accidently added the Podshow.com credit instead.

Here they are:
Music:
Deana Carter - On The Road Again
Dust Rhinos-Perfect World
Great Big Sea-The Chemical Workers Song/Process Man
Celtic Woman-You Raise Me Up
Dempsey Doodle-My Folks Have Always Been Here
Great Big Sea-General Taylor

Poetry:
Ways
Unity
The Assassin
I Try
To A Poppy
Poppies Are Red
By Patrick McNamara

Dr. John McCrae tribute by Patrick McNamara

In Flanders' Fields by Dr. John McCrae

Note: I put it up a bit early because I want to see if it would work better to post on Saturdays or Sundays. I would rather have an episode a day early than a day late and I suspect so would listeners.

Podcast Ping Bonus 3 - Ghosts

This episode complements The Halloween episode; it's an episode with the theme of ghosts.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPingBonus3/ppb3-ghosts.mp3

If you notice I've added some buttons to the podcast page at http://podcastping.blogspot.com to make it easier to subscribe. I've also put a link which allows one to subscribe by e-mail; each time a new episode comes out an e-mail is sent to your inbox. This service is offered through Feedburner and I don't have any control of it so if you have a problem you'll have to deal with them about it, but I've tested it and it works.

I've also added a player from Podcast Pickle to allow you to play the podcasts right from the webpage.

Addendum: You can see the pumpkin I carved this year and those I carved in previous years at http://www.geocities.com/writerpatrick/pumpkin.html.

Podcast Ping 21 - Spooky Stanzas

And here is the Halloween episode:

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing21/PP21-spookystanzas.mp3

It's filled with songs and poetry I've been saving up just for this episode. It's likely one of the best I've done so far and I'm sure that there will be at least one piece you've never heard. If you're tired of all the radio station playing Monster Mash over and over again, then you'll enjoy this one. The bonus episode later this week will follow-up with the theme of ghosts.

I've been working on the rest of the shows for the year, including the Christmas ones. I have two because one will be original music and one will be traditional. I've also packaged the original music in an interesting way, one a little different than I've done before.

I'm planning to clear out everything I've saved up this year, including the poetry, and if I haven't played it by the final show if the year it will go into that. I want to get into all new music and poetry for next year. Some of the poetry I have is stuff I've written years ago. I'm planning to drop themes, with the possible exception of holidays, since I find I'm using music more because it fits the theme than any other reason. This makes it difficult to play some good music that doesn't fit in anywhere. The end of year show will be filled with many of those pieces.

Podcast Ping Bonus 2 - Time

The songs on this show are from PodsafeAudio.com. I'm just trying them out and I wanted to use a few songs. Most of the rest of the year I'll be using material I gathered from Podshow.

Podcast Ping 20 - Poverty and Poetry

For a change this week's show uses music from Archive.org. The next show will be back to Podshow's music.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing20/pp20.mp3

I will be putting out another bonus episode this week. I'm considering a schedule of Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday but that's not likely to be standard until the new year. The shows will likely be about fifteen minutes each, so there will be at least the same amount of music each week as now.

I've also put together a bonus for Halloween aside from the Halloween episode I plan to release next Sunday.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

Podcast Ping Bonus - Comedy Clips

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPingBonus-ComedyClips/pp-ComedyClips.mp3

This is a bonus episode. I'm experimenting a little with doing multiple shows per week instead of one long one. I'll probably do another eight at least to make up for episodes 1-9 which don't really use the current format. Although episode 10 doesn't use podsafe music, it does follow the current format.

After I do nine bonus episodes I'll number them to equalize the number of shows with the current format to those actually being produced. That way when I get to episode 50 I will have the same number of shows in the new format. Of course I'll really have more than 50 shows but that's a matter of what's considered valid.

If things work out well I'll do the shows regularly. The length of the show has been creeping up and I'd like to keep it under 30 minutes. It also has the advantage of making it easier to follow a theme; I can do two different themes each week instead of trying to force them all into one.

The downside is that it takes extra time to post additional shows and I can't say how busy I will be but I'll try to get at least one a week. I also don't know if I'll stay with using themes or just make mixed shows. But any new schedule likely won't come into effect until next year.

Podcast Ping 19 - Dreams

Another early posting, although I may decide to stick with Saturday, depending upon how things go.

The theme of this episode is dreams.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing19/pp19.mp3

Coming in two weeks, the Halloween episode. I've got a couple of good Halloween songs you've likely never heard and Halloween poetry you definately have never heard before.

Podcast Ping 18

I'm putting this one out a little early because with the Thanksgiving holiday here it's a bit busy and I don't know if I'll have time tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving for fellow Canadians.

Podcast Ping 17

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing17/pp17.mp3

No particular theme for this one, or the next, but they tend to complement each other. This one has some masculine material while the next will be more feminine. It's really a case of having a lot of stuff that didn't quite fit a theme. It wasn't even my initial intent to use themes but they came about relatively naturally. Further episodes will be more theme oriented including Dreams and Halloween.

I'm trying to get the episodes out on Sundays now, which should be easy enough for a while since I've got a few episodes already finished.

Podcast Ping 15 - Travel Time

This show deals with time and travel. As always, music is provided by Podshow's Podsafe music network found at music.podshow.com.

http://www.archive.org/download/PodcastPing15/pp15.mp3

Note: If you're listening to the past episodes, the music and poetry format starts about episode 10, though the podsafe music starts at episode 11. Those episodes prior are more experiments leading up to this format but still worth a listen.

Some music combined with poetry. If you like it please let me know and I'll do more. It takes more work to do this than the regular poetry but I think it adds to the podcast.

And don't worry, I don't sing.

Podcast Ping Special 1-Dark Crystal Fan Commentary

Here's a commentary I made for the movie "The Dark Crystal." It's something I've been thinking of doing for some time and I've finally been able to get it done. You will want a copy of the movie to watch while listening to it.

This is my first commentary. Sorry if it comes across as a little awkward and there are plenty of spaces of dead air. It is really intended to be watched with the movie.

I hope you enjoy listening to it. If it's popular enough I may do more.
